Ethnology. Ethnology is a strong area of cultural research. The main object for the discipline is the cultural expression of groups and societies – often mentioned in terms of everyday life studies. It is leading towards an understanding of new ethnicities, modes of urbanism and multiculturalism. The Ethnology section focuses on culturally different ways of living in the past and present and changes to them in a European and global perspective.

Ethnology started in the eighteenth century as a systematic attempt to acquire and compare information on those nonEuropean populations who did not possess written records of their history and cultural heritage. Coined as a derivation of the Greek word ‘ethnos,’ meaning ‘a people,’ the term ‘ethnology’ in its most general meaning indicates a scholarly interest in how aggregations of human beings are distinct from each other in terms of material culture, language, religion, moral ethnology (eth-nol-ŏji) n. the study of the different races of mankind, concerned mainly with cultural and social differences between groups and the problems that arise from their particular ways of life. —ethnic (eth-nik) adj. Ethnology is a specialized discipline within the larger field of anthropology. Within this discipline, the identifying characteristics of a particular cultural or ethnic group are studied in detail, with an eye toward understanding how each of those elements shape the internal function of that group.
